Contrary to what some may think, the battle over DISCLOSE isn't over yet! The U.S. House voted 219-206 Thursday (June 24) to approve the DISCLOSE Act, which would re-instate much of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform measures which were overturned by the Supreme Court. The Senate rejected a cloture vote on July 27 which would have allowed an immediate vote for the bill. However, supporters of the bill are expected to make additional attempts to get this passed when they think they have the votes. Read coverage of the bill approval in the House (The Washington Times). National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) President Frank Wright offers his analysis of the DISCLOSE Act, including how it would hurt free speech, in a column on their organization's site. This bill would place severe restrictions on what 501c(3), 501c(4), and many other grassroots organizations can do - possibly even preventing them from producing voter guides. For a Presidential election, limits would start up to four months before the first primary is held. Call your two U.S. Senators at 202-224-3121 and/or e-mail them to oppose the DISCLOSE Act.
